Meet Lelia
Lelia True brings a rare blend of battlefield-tested leadership, strategic expertise, and a lifelong dedication to service to every challenge she takes on. A graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, she commissioned into the Signal Corps and commanded a tactical communications company during Operation Desert Storm, earning the Bronze Star Medal for exceptionally meritorious service under fire. Airborne and Air Assault qualified, she led soldiers in some of the Army’s most demanding environments before transitioning her discipline and mission focus to the civilian world.
After earning a dual MS/MBA from Purdue University, Lelia spent more than two decades in corporate America, rising to senior director roles at Comcast where she managed $190M+ operations, slashed $12 million in waste, and boosted efficiency by 28%—all while mentoring the next generation of leaders and championing diversity and inclusion initiatives.
She then returned to her passion for developing young people, serving for over a decade as Head of School at the Washington Waldorf School in Bethesda, Maryland. There she guided the school through transformative growth, led a successful $7 million capital campaign, and built a community rooted in academic excellence, artistic development, and social responsibility. A lifelong athlete and coach—inducted into the West Point Athletic Hall of Fame for track & field—she continues to mentor student-athletes as an assistant coach at Winston Churchill High School.
Lelia has been a powerful voice for:
- Strong public schools that prepare every child to thrive
- Fiscal responsibility that keeps Montgomery County affordable for teachers, first responders, and working families
- Smart, forward-looking policies on housing, transportation, and economic resilience in an era of federal uncertainty and rapid technological change
- Honoring our veterans and supporting military families who sacrifice so much
Whether commanding troops in the desert, turning around multimillion-dollar operations, or shaping the minds and character of the next generation, Lelia True has spent her life delivering results with integrity, courage, and care.
Simply put: Lelia True has led with head, heart, and hands at every stage of her journey—and Montgomery County will be stronger, safer, and more prosperous with her on the County Council.
